The staff of Port Nelson United Church bring a variety of skills and talents that are a blessing to our church and our community.
Rev. Dr. Michael Brooks
Rev. Michael Brooks joined Port Nelson as Lead Minister in 2009. He guides the staff team and oversees the various ministries of the church. Michael leads worship, baptisms and weddings. He also provides staff support to the Worship Ministry, Stewardship Ministry, Trustees and Church Board. Michael loves the variety of work that is ministry, especially marking life stages with people. He also keeps busy on the curling rink in the winter and sailing his boat in the summer.
Rev. Karen Eade
Minister of Pastoral Care
Rev. Karen Eade joined Port Nelson as Minister of Pastoral Care in 2021. She provides pastoral visitation and oversees the pastoral care ministries. Karen is available for spiritual care, including visits through zoom and phone. Karen is excited to join the Port Nelson ministry team and be a part of this growing community.
Jennifer Bath joined Port Nelson as Church Administrator in 2019. She provides administrative support to the staff, Church Board, committees, congregation, treasurer and bookkeeper. Jennifer also works with the Facilities Team, Property Ministry and custodian on rental bookings and facility use. Jennifer lives in Burlington with her husband and two children.
Dr. Stillman Matheson
Director of Music
Dr. Stillman Matheson has been the Director of Music at Port Nelson since 2014. In this role he plays the organ, conducts the choir and three handbell ensembles, and oversees all other aspects of the music ministry. In addition to his musical work, Stillman is a Certified Enneagram Teacher (The Enneagram Institute) and enjoys sharing his knowledge of the Enneagram with groups and individuals.
Developer of Youth Ministry
Jay Poitras joined Port Nelson as Developer of Youth Ministry in 2012. Jay leads Pinnacle Young Leaders, for youth from grades 6 to 12. Pinnacle focuses on discussing current events from a faith perspective, leadership development and shared friendship. Jay has worked with children and teens since he was a teenager himself. When not having fun with the youth of Port Nelson, Jay has as much fun with staff, children and their families as principal of a local elementary school.
Developer of Children’s Ministry
Sharon Holmes joined Port Nelson as Developer of Children’s Ministry in 2014. She develops the ministry with children ages 5 to 12, which includes Adventure Crew for Children on Sunday mornings, Friday Family Fun Nights, and PA Days. Sharon was born and raised in Oakville and has always been involved in a church community. Working with children has been a part of Sharon’s life since her early teen years. Among her many interests, Sharon enjoys spending the summer sailing with her husband Mike.
Kelly Rogers joined Port Nelson as Nursery Coordinator in 2019. She provides a welcoming environment to the congregation’s youngest family members, running the staffed nursery room with a small team of volunteers to care for infants and toddlers while their caregivers enjoy the service. Kelly is very active in the community and keeps busy with her two boys, two dogs, two cats and as well as running her own floral design business.
Riley Denver joined Port Nelson as the Communications Coordinator in 2018. He crafts content for the weekly e-newsletter, manages the church’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, produces graphic design marketing products, and liaises with media. Outside of Port Nelson, Riley keeps busy with his young family, as well as running his own communications business.
Brian joined Port Nelson as Custodian in spring 2021. He ensures the property and buildings meet the needs of the various groups and ministries, and provides staff support to the Property Management Committee. Brian brings 25 years’ experience as a custodian with the Halton District School Board. Being semi-retired, he enjoys spending time with his grandkids, golfing, gardening and working in his stained glass studio with his wife.
Paul joined Port Nelson in early 2020. Paul maintains congregational financial records, including weekly contributions and deposits, as well as recording disbursement. Paul provides monthly financial statements to the treasurer, keeping all records updated in a timely manner and assists in year-end work for the annual financial audit. Paul lives in Toronto with his wife, Stella, and two adult children. He has over 30 years of accounting work experience within various churches and church related charitable organizations.
